Jornadas de wargames Historicos V2.0 Buenos Aires Historical Game day...

  • Dust
  • Impetus en etapa renacentista
  • Disposable Heroes (Alemanes vs Americanos)

Malvinas, Top Malo House

Last year we had a very good game day of historical games, and this was repeated on my birthday this year. I should have written more about it by the last month but I had no time for it.

The games shown were

  • Dust
  • Impetus Renaissance stage
  • Disposable Heroes ( German vs American )
  • A game made by players and set on the conflict on Malvinas
  • Napoleonics with some rules but I could not see it.

In my case I amused myself playing the Malvinas Game and then Impetus. I also spent some time a game of Disposable Heroes because it was Master Yoda who was showing it, and the rest of the games I did not pray much attention because I was absorbed by these three interesting tables.

Malvinas, Top Malo House

One of the tables I played was settled by Skarteff, Emiliano and Patán, who is a friend of Skarteff and Master Yoda. Not only they brought the Rules in a beta state, but painted the miniatures in the last hours for us to play a real scenario of the conflict of Malvinas (Top Malo House).
I did not know the history of this battle of comandos and in fact, my position regarding Malvinas is quite different from most Argentinians. It is a piece of land that was taken by the English imperialism, but which in any way now we belong. I'm more in favor of independence or some kind of agreement on the government of that land. And I usually it scare me enough when jumping with cheap nationalism. But there is also a reality, some people, young people who fought the war, they were forced to be there, to fight there and many die or become incapacitated there.

At this point, the boys were very very smart and brought a Malvinas veteran. Chatting with the guy left me a very bitter taste when he tells you everything that suffered there, but at the same time it rescues the human part of the conflict that usually can be lost. I chatted a long time with the guy, basically talking about the poor conditions in the war and how he managed to survive. For me it was a very interesting experience, from every point of view. I wish I could have talked more.

The game: The game is pretty simple, it uses D6s, it has few dice rolls, basically you use squad of soldiers and there are some rules for the pinning simmilar to DH style. As you take losses you stay within a few turns with little action other than surrender or flee. We played with Von Tuz (which has a very nice historical blog) and I came by chance to play with the argentinian band. The mission was to survive and escape, and what I did was playing it with the idea of running, although I took a couple of Englishmen in the way I ended up unable to do anything but give up because I had lost almost everyone.

The game is very easy to learn, it's fun and as the idea is to recreate real battles I find it interesting to see how they can keep adding rules. They are still in beta but they have very good initiative.

Some photos of the game (with miniatures in 28 mm of a company not remember the name but I'll find out), with the scenery made for the occasion.

The house

Do not put above but the game has a dynamic simultaneous turns and you give orders to the group of soldiers, these orders are, shoot, move or cover.

I think I said, but just in case: the game is very fast, simple and interesting, we must be alert to the changes that are having to do more and more interesting still.

Disposable Heroes, Iron Ivan Games

I spent some time at DH table to see if there was room, but there he was Milk Powder pretty pussy playing. I was close to Von Tuz we were chatting and waiting to play. The pictures on the table armed master yoda are incredible.

German soldiers

Nice Scenery made by Maestro Yoda

Alex, Krax, Von Tuz and a guy I dont know.

A Sherman
After being like wet dogs waiting to make us place to play DH, it fell Pablito (aka El Verde), and literally dragged us to the table of impetus. I went because the truth is that crazy to put very cool game and you have to respond with love to this kind of behavior. Saruman the other side were a kid and I do not know.

Renaissance Impetus
Well, this was the first time I looked at this game. Scale: 28 mm, great! The idea of the game was to face Italian against French, so there were many pikes, many cavalry and cannons (which did nothing, or almost). The game was slowed by the rules, but quick because we had bad luck and we broke muuch toto .
System: each model represents many soldiers, which makes sense given land but the metaphor of a miniature soldier. Until you get used to it going for a while. D6s are used and the system itself is very similar in parts to Warhammer Fantasy.
Scenery: none, because the game was to learn.
Flavor that was me : the historical period does not tempt me much , but it's a game that eventually prove.

Miniatures : very good, El verde says he paints really good, he say, the reality is that the miniatures look good, but saying it is not good to walk as if your two grandmothers had been run over by a train when you were 4.
Let the photos that we see a little more of this:

To conclude, the game day was a good time to meet personally many people on the forum that we have been playing or trying to play different historical games.

The balance is very positive for me, besides the fact that I won some miniatures of Romans in a draw in 28 mm (joya!) I have to think what I will use them.

A couple more photos of the event taken by the camera of Nap:

The above are the awards, the following companies participated:

Finally an army that brought a madman from Córdoba (who came especially for this):

Well, this is the end of this post.

Well I want to say that the friends of Sentinel games are really close to get their game funded, so, if you want to help them, just go to their kickstarter!

More info about them here and here!

Ex Illis, Interview

Some years ago I was going through internet searching for miniatures and games and I came to Ex Illis. Firs the name caught my attention, then when I saw the miniatures they were nice, but then I found that there was some kind of integration between the rules and a computer program. That was what intrigued me the most. Years passed, I started to play infinity and after all I forgot this game, until I found them again with a KickStarter Campaign. I got in contact to ask them about it, and here is the little interview.

  • Who are you (the ex illis guys)? Where are you from? are you wargamers? which wargames have you played, or still play?

Thierry Husser: Thierry is the art director at Chinchilla Games. He also is our resident painter. He won many miniature painting contest and is a huge collector of miniatures. He is from France. He doesn't really play wargames as much as paint for them.

I would like to see some of its painted miniatures (I am looking for them on the web)...

Rock Mercier: Rock is our game designer, he's from Quebec, Canada and he love wargames. He plays pretty much everything he can get his hands on and is currently an active tournament player for Warmachine and Warhammer.

Patrick Nadeau: Pat is our tech guy. He's from Quebec, Canada. He will play Ex illis with us sometimes but he mostly plays video games. Although he is more of a casual player, he is pretty good with stats and a fast learner so he is a very able casual player.

Steeve Monniere
: I'm the producer for Ex illis. I'm also from Quebec, Canada and I'm more of a boardgamer than a wargamer. I play a lot of Ex illis with the guys and I participate on the game design but I bring the "casual" easy going aspect of boardgames into the mix.

Some miniatures to ilustrate the post!

  • I remember Ex illis because it had some integration between the miniatures and the computer. Also I remember nice miniatures, How is the game going?

We are still supporting the servers and all the infrastructure for the Digital game. We see games being played every week and we are pretty satisfied with the game so far. We are working on a re-release of the iOS version, and if we have enough demand for it, we are looking into making a port on Android after the Kickstarter campaign. We also lifted the DRM on the game so now anybody can play without any activation code.

  • Which are the people you are aiming with you game?
We are aiming for a game that is deep enough for hard-core player but still simple enough for them to play with their kids.
  • You are about to release a kickstarter, tell us about it? What is the purpose of it?  which is the time of it?

We are launching rulebook for a new version of the game. The Kickstarter campaign goal is let people who don't like playing a miniature wargame with computers have a shot at our game and our miniatures. This is aimed towards old school players and of course, we want both games to share the same miniatures. Having both games to support our production will hopefully increase our capabilities to bring out new stuff more frequently. We are doing the Kickstarter campaign starting today, Nov. 6th until Dec. 5th at 11:59PM.

The book wich will be printed!

  • Tell us about you game, what do you think are the features of it that will attract old wargamers (like us) and also which do you think will attract new players?

When we started making Ex illis back in 2009, our goal was to ensure hard core gamers would enjoy the game, but that the game would still be playable by kids (especially our kids). We have similar objectives for this version of the game. We don't want to make it so complicated that only the most hardcore gamers are able to understand it, but we want it to be deep enough so people like us still have fun and a sensation of control.
  • Who are the sculptors and painters that you have?

Thierry Husser paints all of our models and he's doing a very good job.

Our "sculpting" process involves doing the miniatures with 3D models on computers. We have a couple freelancer 3D modeler that will convert our concept art to beautiful 3D models. The rest of the process is kind of a secret, but it involves technology at its finest ;)

Lets see some art of this guys!

  • You have the game settled in a fantasy world, which are the main factions we could choose?

In the book, we will be focusing on English, French Angels and Demons factions. Those are the factions that people like the most in the digital game. Having data on armies and games played help us determine where we need to put our efforts.

  • Ex illis is the only game you have?

We tried our shot at a small game for iOS called Beachball pop. This was a fun project, just to see where we could go with that. After the Ex illis book is delivered we have a couple ideas for a miniature game involving super-heroes. We will see when we have the time for it.

Nice!

  • Where could we go to learn more from you (twitter, FB, webpage, KS)?

Kickstarter of course
Twitter:@ex_illis
Facebook: Ex illis
Ex illis webpage:
Chinchilla Games webpage:

  • Do you wan to tell us a something more about you?

All of us at Chinchilla games are gamers. We love games of all kind and most of us work in the video games industry. We want to make games that people will enjoy and play often.

  • Time of recommendations, this blog ask the people interviewed to give as three recommendations on each three topics: Games you love, books you have read and music you have heard.

I can't tell for the others but for me :

Games, aside from Ex-illis:

Books :

as for the music, i listen mostly to whatever comes up on Rdio.

Dibujos, muchos dibujos, lindo arte...

This weekend I paint, not a lot, but much of what I like to paint was under my hands: first the russian alternative dwarf heroe (see this post), also I have been painting (or airbrushing) the german Panzer III and the halftrack, wich were primed using the airbrush (I am learning how to use it), also I have painted the warlord russian infantry (the old metal box). In this post I will talk about the dwarf, and I have to make other posts about the airbrush...
I havent finished none of them, but I am pretty happy with the weekend...

I primed first the dwarf with a black spray and then I uses an electric blue to paint the coat. Afther the plain blue I mix it with some white and start to highlight the external part of the folds, very rough because then I plan to shade it massively using the blue shade from Vallejo.

The next picture was not meant to be here, but it resisted my failed attempts to delete it...

After the cape I started with the dwarf body, and paint the shirt (or this cloth wich is above the armor) with the Vallejo Red.

Then I paint the dwarf beard and another piece of cloth with Vallejo Light Orange and the wolf head under the left foot and the wings of the helm with Vallejo White. And I painted the leather armor which is under everything with Vallejo Hull Red.

After all this I paint the helm and some parts of the armor with black because the primed (black) was not good.

This are the colours I have used so far: Vallejo Red, Vallejo Light Orange,  Vallejo Hull Red, Vallejo White and Tenier Azul Eléctrico (electric blue).
Los colores que usé:

Next I plan to paint with some metal colors from Vallejo, and then use the Shades to introduce contrast. And in the end, I guess I will line to add more contrast.

See you in the next posts!

Grand Prix, Antwerp Mtg madness coverage.

The friends of MTGMadness were in Belgium making a coverage of the Grand Prix of Antwerp. They are rather crazy, as you might guess from their videos.

They have more videos in their channel, you might find them useful.
The funny thing is that youtube had banned some videos for some reason (in general if you put music wich copyright you might find this kind of messages). They have nice coverages of the grand prix they go. If you are a competitive player, go and check its channel. I hope they could upload again the first video of Antwerp, because it was really funny.

They have uploaded it again...

Abrazos.
B.
