Secret Weapon Interview // Entrevista a Secret Weapon Miniatures

I have known Secret Weapon mostly because it is a well knwon company from the gaming scene, I have never bought nor a base nor scenery from them, but It allwasy liked me that such a small company was so prolific... I got in touch last month to make an interview and here we have justin among us.

• Who are Secret Weapon Miniatures? How do you started?

I started Secret Weapon after my old job started to (literally) kill me. I was working too many hours, and was too stressed. When my wife and I decided to have a child (Shaemus, he's four now) we agreed I should work from home and stop stressing. My background was in business development, and I had put together a plan when I was bored at the old job -- and that's what we're following now. The company is five years old, and there are five full time employees at the warehouse. For my part, I still work from home, and spend as much time with my son as I can.

Bernohn: This is really great, we all want to do something like this, work from home, stay with the family, You are one of the few who made it...

• I have seen really nice bases and paint sets, do you sell miniatures as your name state or are you planning to?

I'm not likely to do full miniatures, as there are so many great options out there already. I prefer to focus on accessories, and especially on tables and terrain. I do hope to have more vehicles on offer in the future though, as they're really a passion for me.

Barriers for modern/scifi games

• Which wargames do you play?

I'm a big fan of 40k, Warmachine, Malifaux, and X-Wing. Of course these days I'm so busy I'm more of a board gamer, when I have time to play at all. But I have plans to create a new Imperial Fists army, and finally finish painting my Khador force, so... here's hoping.

• Which is the product you have designed you love most?

Absolutely the Tablescapes Tiles! I had a big vision for these when we started, and what we've delivered is so far beyond that it's still hard to believe. The detail the factory got, and the depth and height we managed to engineer is simply amazing. Now that I see people adding fish to the Rolling Fields creeks, or LED lights to their Urban Streets set... it's just getting better.

• What are the products you will release in the incoming month?

Right now it's all about filling in the new base sizes. Every company seems to have decided to add new sizes all at once. We've just released a LOT of 80mm and 100mm round lip bases, and we have Knight size, 32mm, 50mm and those new ovals for GW players in the queue.

• I have seen you have a nice collection of washes, how was the reception of them?

These were originally created by Les Bursley of Awesome Paintjob fame, and I was using them for every one of my commission projects. He stopped making them just as I started Secret Weapon... and so I had to have them. I couldn't imagine painting armies without them! The reception has been fantastic, and it's always fun to hear people talking about Baby Poop.

• If you would have to recommend three small companies related to wargames, to have an eye on them, which would it be?

• Victoria Miniatures, of course. I think she has the best infantry models on the market, and it's great to see someone finally designing realistic female infantry figures. She's a legend, and what she's producing is only going to get better.

• PoweredPlay Gaming is another. They're really making big improvements on their LED sets, and I see more and more of them on models now. I look forward to seeing what they do in the next couple of years.

• Industrial Mechanika is a garage kit maker that produces some of the finest model kits I've ever worked with. Michael is a real professional, working with incredibly talented designers to produce some amazing designs. I have quite a collection of them now, and I'll be getting more. I mean, his Frankenstein kit came with sections of REAL CHAIN MAIL to attach to the model. You can't beat details like that!

• Time of recommendations, I ask three recommendations of games you like, of books you love and music you have listen (three of each)

I'm trying to think of games that people might not see every day. I mean, Relic Knights is great, but everyone knows about it.

• Angry Sheep is a favorite, but as the designer I might be biased.
• Takenoko is a current favorite as my son also plays (original webpage).
• I've played a lot of King of Tokyo recently too, which is always a fun pub game.

I'm funny when it comes to book. Next to my bed you will ALWAYS find the complete Shakespeare, and the complete Sherlock Holmes collection. But then I rotate in cheesy fiction. I just finished re-reading the Eisenhorn trilogy (Xenos, Malleus and Hereticus), anyone else think it's weird an Ordo Xenos inquisitor never goes after aliens? Just saying...., And I am going to get back to some of Robin Hobb's work now.

• Free space to say whatever you want!

I just want to say thank you to everyone that has helped to make Secret Weapon possible. Not just my wife for insisting I do it, and stick with it when other job offers came in, but to the fans, friends, and customers that keep the lights on, and the resin flowing. You people saved my life. REALLY! We have a really amazing community of generous, creative, and fun people, and it's amazing to see the support and enthusiasm they can bring together.

So keep playing, and keep painting!

Conocí Secret Weapon, hace banda de tiempo, cuando empzamos a jugar infinity con manimal y el resto del grupete, porque hacían unas bases muy buenas. Nunca llegué a comparles bases (en general soy de los que les gusta adornar la base y hacerla con pastito, piedritas y otras cositas, pero siempre los miré con cariño, en particular porque tienen elementos de escenografía que son de altísima calidad. Hace un tiempo me contacté para hacerles una entrevista, colgué un poco con la traducción, pero aquí me hallo, terminándola para darle para adelante y sacarla. Agradezco a Justin por su tiempo y bueno, saltemos directamente a la entrevista en sí.

• ¿Quiénes forman parte de Secret Weapon Miniatures? ¿Cómo empezaron?

Empecé Secret Weapon después de mi antiguo trabajo comenzó (literalmente) a matarme. Yo estaba trabajando demasiadas horas, y estaba demasiado estresado. Cuando mi esposa y yo decidimos tener un hijo (Shaemus, que tiene cuatro ahora) nosotros acordamos que debía trabajar desde casa y dejar de estresarme como un campeón. Mi formación fue en el desarrollo de negocios, y había elaborado un plan cuando me aburría en el antiguo trabajo, y eso es lo que estamos siguiendo ahora. La compañía tiene cinco años, ya hay cinco empleados a tiempo completo en el almacén. Por mi parte, sigo trabajando desde mi casa, y pasando la mayor parte del tiempo que puedo con mi hijo.

Bernohn: Esto es realmente groso, es algo que todos queremos hacer, trabajar desde la casa, estar con la familia, sos uno de los pocos que lo logró hacer...

• En tu página vi bases muy copadas y sets de pintura, ¿vendes miniaturas como dice el nombre de la empresa? ¿lo tienen planeado?

No tengo la tendencia a hacer miniaturas completas, ya que hay muchas  opciones de muy buena calidad por ahí ya. Prefiero centrarme en los accesorios, y sobre todo en las mesas y el terreno. Espero tener más vehículos para ofrecer en el futuro, ya que son realmente una pasión para mí.

• ¿Qué wargames jugás?

Soy un gran fan de 40k, Warmachine, Malifaux, y X-Wing. Por supuesto, estos días  en los que estoy tan ocupado soy más jugador de boardgames dado que no tengo tiempo para jugar en absoluto. Pero tengo planes para crear un nuevo ejército de Puños Imperiales, y finalmente terminar de pintar mi fuerza de Khador, así que aquí está la esperanza.

• De los productos que diseñaste, ¿Cuál te gusta más?

Absolutamente los Tablescapes Tiles! Tuve una buena idea cuando empezamos, y lo que conseguimos hasta ahora es dificil de creer. El detalle que conseguimos en el proceso de fabricación , as profundidades y las alturas que conseguimos diseñar son simplemente asombrosas. Ahora que veo a la gente añadir pescado a los arroyos de Rolling Fields, o las luces LED para su conjunto de Calles Urbanas ... como que se pone todo mejor.

• ¿Cuáles son los productos que lanzará en el mes entrante?

En este momento es todo acerca de la cumplimentación de los nuevos tamaños de base. Cada empresa parece haber decidido añadir nuevas dimensiones a la vez. Acabamos de lanzar un montón de 80mm y 100mm bases de labios redondos, y tenemos tamaño Knight, de 32 mm, 50 mm y los nuevos óvalos para los jugadores de GW en la cola.

• Vi que tiene una buena colección de lavados, ¿cómo fue la recepción de ellos?

Estos fueron creados originalmente por Les Bursley de Awesome Paintjob fame, y yo estaba utilizando para cada uno de mis proyectos de comisión. Él dejó de hacerlas, y como yo empecé Secret Weapon ... y así que tuve que tenerlos. ¡No me podía imaginar pintar ejércitos sin ellos! La recepción ha sido fantástica, y siempre es divertido escuchar a la gente hablando sobre Baby Poop.

• Si vos tenés que recomendar tres pequeñas empresas relacionadas con los wargames, para tenerles un ojo encima, ¿Cuáles serían?

• Victoria Miniatures, por supuesto. Creo que tiene los mejores modelos de infantería en el mercado, y es genial ver a alguien por fin diseñar figuras de infantería femeninas realistas. Ella es una leyenda, y lo que está produciendo sólo va a mejorar.
• PoweredPlay Gaming es otra. Ellos realmente están haciendo grandes mejoras en sus conjuntos de LED, y veo más y más de ellos en los modelos ahora. Estoy deseando ver lo que hacen en el próximo par de años.
• Industrial Mechanika es un fabricante de kit de garaje que produce algunos de las mejores maquetas con las que trabajé. Michael es un verdadero profesional, trabajando con diseñadores talentosos para producir algunos diseños increíbles. Tengo una buena colección de ellos ahora, y voy a recibir más. Quiero decir, su kit de Frankenstein vino con secciones de malla REAL para insertarse en el modelo. ¡No se puede superar detalles como eso!

• Tiempo de recomendaciones, pido tres recomendaciones de juegos que te gusten, de los libros que amaste leer y la música que te encantó escuchar (tres de cada uno).

Estoy tratando de pensar en juegos que la gente no ve todos los días. Quiero decir, Relic Knights es geníal, pero todo el mundo ya lo conoce.

• Angry Sheep es un favorito, pero como diseñador puedo llegar no ser muy imparcial.
• Takenoko me encanta porque lo puedo jugar con mi hijo (página original).
• Jugué un montón de King of Tokyo ultimamente, y termina siendo un lindo juego de pub...

Soy divertido a la hora de los libros. Al lado de mi cama vos vas a encontrar siempre las obras completas de Shakespeare, y la colección completa de Sherlock Holmes. Pero entonces puedo rotar en la ficción barata. Acabo de terminar de volver a leer la trilogía Eisenhorn (Xenos, Malleus y Hereticus), ¿nadie más cree que es raro que un inquisidor Ordo Xenos nunca vaya a por los aliens? Y voy a volver a algunos de los trabajos de Robin Hobb ahora.

• Espacio libre para decir lo que quieras...

Sólo quiero dar las gracias a todos los que han ayudado a hacer posible Secret Weapon. No sólo mi esposa por insistir en que lo haga, y  que me aferré a esto cuando otras ofertas de trabajo entraron, pero a los fans, amigos y clientes que mantienen las luces encendidas, y la resina fluyendo. Ustedes me salvaron la vida. ¡DE VERDAD! Tenemos una muy increíble comunidad de personas generosas, creativas y divertidas, y es increíble ver el apoyo y el entusiasmo que pueden reunir.

Pintando en el finde / / Weekend Pain Ting

Bueno este finde, en particular el sábado durante el partido de rugby entre Los Pumas y la selección de Togo, me puse a pintar. Tengo unos 5 enanos con ballestas que estoy pintando para jugar algún Skirmish de Fantasía (Mordheim o SoBH, o el que se les ocurra al grupo) y tenía que terminarlos. No los terminé, pero les di luces a las capas y sombras a las barbas. Además le volví a dar la base al Cadmus de los Shavastiis, cambiando el tono de azul a uno muy oscuro. Además, seguí iluminando las armas y parte de la armadura con capas diluidas de amarillo. Por ultimo le di una nueva capa de naranja porque tenía una pero no logré que cubra completamente el azul de fondo.

Además le saqué fotos a la loca que voy a usar en la campaña de Ale terminada. repinté el arma porque no me gustó el plateado. Ahora espero que próximamente logre terminar el shavastii y la uxia que anda por ahí dando vueltas.

Well this weekend, especially on Sunday during the rugby match between the Pumas and the selection of Togo, I started to paint. I have about 5 dwarves with crossbows that I am painting to play some Skirmish Fantasy Game (Mordheim or Sobh, or they can think of the group) and I had to finish them. I have not finished them, but I gave them the lights in the clothes and the shadows on the beards. I went back to change the base colour to the Shavastiis Cadmus, changing the tone of blue to a dark one. Also, I kept lighting up the weapons and armor with the diluted yellow layers. Finally I gave him a new coat of orange in the armour of the legs  because it had an layer that failed to completely cover the blue background.

Also I took pictures of the finished Dwarf that I will use in the Alejandro Campaign. I repainted the gun because I did not like the silver metallic. Now I hope that soon I will manage to finish the shavastii and the poor uxia that's out there spinning all the time.

I dont like the new drones

When I started infinity (four or five years ago), I loved the remotes of the Combined army, they had tentacles, wings, the seems to crawl from place to place. They were very alienish style, they were different from the other remotes. Years had past, now we are under 3erd edition and we are seen the new remotes, and call me grumpy old man, I dont like them. They are remotes, but they lack the differentiation from any other remotes. They are much of the same, and even exquisitely painted by Angel Giraldez they dont much the power of the old ones.

Cuando empecé a jugar infinity (hace cuatro o cinco años), me encantaron los remotos del ejército combinado. Tenían tentáculos, ohh por dios ä iä Cthulhu fhtagn, tenían alas, parecían arrastrarse de lugar en lugar. Tenían un claro estilo alienígena y eran diferentes de todos los demás remotines remotanes. Pasó el tiempo, envejecimos, llegó la tercera edición y con ella aparecieron los nuevos remoto. Seré un viejo choto, pero la verdad que no me gustaron, los remotos así como estaban para mi estaban geniales. Ahora me parece que le falta diferenciarse del resto de los remotos. Son, para mi gusto y paladar, más de lo mismo pintados zarpadamente por el loco Giraldez, pero les falta el toque que tienen los viejos.

Menhir games and another KS, Itle lo hizo de nuevo.

An old friend from this blog had released another Kickstarter this month. I was about to write about his KS but when I finally visit the KS I found 50K, overly funded. So first Lets know about it:

Idyllwild Games is proud to present "Dark Age Outpost". Sculpted by Ramiro of Menhir Games, Dark Age Outpost is a 28mm scale terrain & miniature set. Towers, Gates (fully functional) and Walls made of brown high-impact polystyrene will make a great addition to any wargame table or RPG adventure. Along with the Outpost, 6 badass pewter miniatures are available to help siege or guard your fortress! With your help we will be able to make high-quality 3D prints, then molds, then produce the final products to be shipped to your doorstep.

When asked about this KS, Itle (Ramiro) said

This KS is to get into the world of plastic on one side and on the other to test the potential of "local industry", that is, to prove how goodquality products can be produced here, first starting with something relatively simple like scenery.
If this turns out successful, the next step will be to make miniatures, to thereby keep growing hobby products, financed by hobbyists outside, while continuing to grow outside here to offer cheaper products and try to take off the hobby locally.
In this KS, the key is the GOLD pledge, many things besides the same pledge takes many freebies, part of which (the thumbnails dem ics) can be redeemed for things more plastic, .. The pledge is carried GOLD as 4 meters of buildings (walls, doors and gates).

So, from here we hope this project gets really funded, and they are getting it.

Bueno, Itle sacó otro KS y esta vez la terminó de pegar. La posta es que el loco saca un KS de escenografía, se terminó de financiar al toque y ahora todo lo que viene es de regalo. La verdad es que de a poco el chabón le encontró la vuelta a este mundillo sacando cosas de calidad y en buen precio.

El otro día le pregunté a itle qué onda el KS este, qué era lo más groso del mismo y me respondió lo siguiente:

Este KS de ahora es para adentrarme en el mundo del plástico por un lado y por otro para probar el potencial que tiene la "industria local", osea, probar que tan buena calidad se puede producir acá, primero empezando con algo relativamente sencillo como escenografía.
Si sale bien, el siguiente paso será hacer miniaturas, para de ese modo seguir creciendo con productos del hobbie, financiado por los hobbystas de afuera, para que además de seguir creciendo afuera, acá poder ofrecer productos baratos e intentar hacer despegar el hobby localmente, cosa difícil siendo que para jugar algo tenes que comprar minis afuera, y toda la bola, como ya sabemos, cosa que no ayuda en nada ni logisticamente, ni cronologicamente ni economicamente al desarrollo del hobby.
En este KS, el pledge clave es el GOLD, se lleva muchas cosas ademas del pledge mismos, muchos freebies, parte de los cuales (las miniaturas dem etal) se pueden canjear por mas cosas de plastico,.. El pledge GOLD se lleva como 4 metros lineales de edificaciones (muros, puertas y torres), suficiente para hacerte alta fortaleza de madera.

Estuve un poco apagado en el blog, no porque no haya hecho nada sinó que me costó encontrar el tiempo para publicar. Pero como estoy ahora con tiempo libre subo un par de imágenes de minis que ando pintando.

I have been with the blog a little silent (too much work makes Jack a dull boy), but here we are again). I have been painting, specialli Dwarves for my two projects, a Dwarf skirmish warband, and for a KOW army. Here you have some of them.

Los enanos de arriba forman parte de una serie de miniaturas para jugar skirmish (si anibal, berto o guillote se dignan a decidir qué juego, porque a unos les gusta Mordheim, a otros no, a mi me gusta SoBH, y así estamos)...

Después, dando vueltas por la ciudad encontré dos cosas que me gustaron mucho: una estatua al inca Garcilazo de la Vega, que tiene las águilas bicéfalas vaya uno a saber para qué y unos bointos dragones en el subte C estación Belgrano.
