Ghost Train Games, Interview

About two months ago in one of the many Facebook groups I am subcribed to, it appeared a publication of a new game with a western aestetics and no more information. As many of this new games coming out, it is from Spain, and as most of these Spanish games, they have a high quality miniatures. I contacted them for an interview and they agreed with pleasure. Before the interview, I read the rulesystem of the game and the truth is that I liked it. It has a system simmilar to the AROs from infinity system, but we'll see that it has a different origin. The setting of the game is in the mid-nineteenth century, in a world a little different (more fantastic, more interesting for me too).By the time I got to know the game, and set up the interview had not yet painted miniatures , today we are already seeing quite a few models with a level of very good painting. But let our guests today speak of their creation, with you the friends of Ghost Train Games.

  • Who are Ghost Train Games?

Strictly speaking, Ghost Train Games is Juan Carlos Gonzáles and César Librán, a pair of entrepreneurs who had get into convert our love for the wargames into our own personal project, we hope to enrich this hobby with the highest quality products. But Ghost Train Games is also the friends who support us and a good number of colaborators with whom we have a more than profesional relationship, including sculptors, illustrators, graphic desingers  and so on...

Steam Punk? What is this Steam Punk?
  • How long have you been working on this game (1865 ACW)?

We have started to grow the project some two years ago. It has been a long road and a tough one and we hope that it will end marvelously.

Nicely painted miniature.
  • Are you wargame players? which wargames do you play (or have you played)?
We sum among the two of us almost 50 years of wargaming. Both of us are hungry players and we have gone through many wargames: Warhammer(s), Infinity, Warzone, Confrontation, Warmachine/Hordes, Helldorado, Warmaster, A Call To Arms and a long etc. Actually we are playing Warma-hordes most of the time.

A call to arms.

Bernohn's Note: I havent heard of A call to arms, I'll look a little to see how is the game and the miniatures. I'm not a fan of Babylon 5, but for what you have said to me in private it have a nice rule system.
  • Who sculpts the miniatures? and who did create the rules?
The rules and the whole product are creations of our own, of César and Juan Carlos, and the sculptures are in charge of freelance sculptors. Some of the models we have been showing are from Tercio Creativo and others are from Manuel Olmedo. Shortly we will reveal also a spectacular model in which Alessio Cisbani is working on.

BsN: The guys of Tercio Creativo sculpt very well, they have a very interesting game. Still I could not buy any miniatures from them, but I love them and if a friend travels to Spain I would surely ask some this miniatures. Some years ago I made one of the first interviews of the blog to them.
BsN2: I recommend looking at images of the sculptures of Juan Olmedo (the link in his name), they are very good, he has also a page of a game that is creating.

BsN3: You may look for the rules in their page. I strongly recommend to read the rules.

Whats this?

  • It shook me that the miniatures are not painted, are you looking for a painter?

In truth we have wanted to sharpen so much of the quality of the sculping process, that it has delayed us a little bit on that department. The miniatures are right now in the painting studios, and soon we will be showing them. We are sure that you will love the work that MayArt and Winterland are doing, but we wanted to show the miniatures unpainted, so you could appreciate the details and the quality of the product.

BsN: the miniatures were not painted when I started the interview, but now they are showing the painted miniatures (really nice painted) which you are seeing in this post.

Metal!

  • I note in the rules a clear influence from Infinity (the wargame): in the Aros, in the use of a D20... Which games have you been inspired in to create the rule system? (among us, readers, ACW guys and me, I really like it).

Although it is logical that our Reaction system reminds you the infinity ARO, actually the influence surely would be Warzone, an older and less well-known game. If we had to name the influencies of our game, surely it will be Warzone, Vor The Maelstrom and WarmaHordes, but we differente from most of the games on the market by our unique and dynamic system of impusles and the tactical reserve.

Run you fools!

  • The game has two factions initially (the South and the North, Confederate and Union), but you are showing that there are magical creatures that are facing the Confederates and also you show that there might be other factions. Which are they?
We have more than 9 factions in the chamber. We started working those two factions because, after all, we set the game in the American Civil War. Today we have 5 already prepared, which have been more or less introduced. They will join these two initial factions: Natives and the Spanish, who are far from the Steampunk/Victoriana North and South aesthetics and provide a much more Fantastic atmosphere to game. The fifth is the New Aztlán Empire, the resurgence of the old gods in pre-Columbian Mexico and its expansion, our alternative version of the imperial period in this country, strongly supported by .. well, we already see. There are also Russian, Chinese, British and some more .. we do not want to reveal all yet.

B's N: what a mystery, what a mystery. Surprises are always nice ...

  • What came first: the rule system or the miniatures? Why have you chosen the American civil war?
They came at the same time. The miniatures began to be designed since the first minute, although the sculpting was addressed later. In much the rules have been shaped to accommodate the models we wanted to create and the story we wanted to tell.
The American Civil War is a really interesting historical period. There are many heroes and characters, battles, events ... plus, the actual course of history during the nineteenth century in America fit perfectly in our history. We have introduced magic and technology, but at a historical level we have not changed much the facts, which we believe is a good part of the charm of our atmosphere. It is also a wonderfully documented period, has been (and still is) a pleasure to investigate.

NdB: Particularly, this historical period does not generate much passion to me. Maybe because its not studied here and not well know, and what we learn is all the period of 60-80 years that took to "build" the Argentina Republic (via Civil Wars, by partition of the country, warlords, for many many deaths, exiles, and the British Empire behind it with a fork and knife waiting give us the free trade).

  • What do you think you will add to the rules?

The next step will be to write the complete rules of scenery and go sketching scenarios. Otherwise, save adjustments, rules are already in a version, we think, quite definitive. In any case it is a live ruleset where we will be adding more elements (such as optional rules for Enviromental conditions on scenarios).
B's N: I like the idea of adding Enviromental conditions to the game..

  • Your web page says that soon you will be launching a Kickstarter campaign, tell us a bit more about this please.

Indeed. We will start a campaign on Kickstarter.com on March 22 and it will last one month. That is the final stage of this journey, and the starting point at once. To launch this project we need the funding required to meet the initial costs of production. Pray attention to our website, Facebook and Twitter, we will keep you informed of the process with updates, news and surprises.

  • Time of the recommendations. It is a tradition in the blog to ask to the people interviewed three recommendations on three topics: books you have loved to read, Games you have loved to play and music that touches you in the deepest part.

Hard, hard , hard to choose only 3 Games:
  • Warmachine/Hordes has a fantastic set of rules, balanced and really well oriented towards competitive gameplay, whose organization highlights the company that publishes it, Privateer Press.
  • Nemesis/Kensei from Zenit Miniatures, has some of the most spectacular miniatures in the market and a recent review of the system.
  • Relics of Tor Gaming is also very interesting, with some astonishing miniatures.

Books:
Music:

Well, I hope you get the funding to continue seeing your lovely miniatures. Thanks for the interview!

Ambos somos ávidos jugadores y hemos tocado muchos, Warhammer(s), Infinity, Warzone, Confrontation, Warmachine/Hordes, Helldorado, Warmaster, A Call To Arms y un largo etc.

Minis de A call To arms

Abrazos.

¡Ahí vienen los brujos!, New Daturazis for Infinity the game

When I was a teen Los Brujos were THE alternative Band, songs as Kanishka or La bomba musical, sounded everywhere.

In fact it was said that Nirvana stole the riff of this theme because they were the support band the only time Nirvana was here in Bs As. Compare the previous song with this Very Ape from In Utero.

But this was not the main theme of this post, I wanted to talk about this:

Nice, dont you think?

Well this is the whole new pictures:
Veamos las fotitos:

First thing you realize is that these new miniatures really looks like martial artists, they have a savage look, the weapons are in some cases, huge, but the skin color is what I like most. They look like to have been a serious sun burnt, and maybe that what made them angry, they are in pain because they have forgoten the sun blocker. And this miniatures will help to create conciousness about the risks of sun exposition.

(alternativas interesantes)/Is there life after Games Workshop?

The idea of this post is to share some alternatives to Games Workshop Games, not from my point of view, but from the miniature shop guy. First in spanish then in English (scroll down)

Armies of Arcana, genérico para batallas Fantásticas...

B.

mirmidonia

Well, I was having fun reading all the speculations about the downfall of Games Workshop when I decided to do something different. We all know that there are other games but who better than our friends of Mirmidonia to tell us what alternatives are there of high quality games. The idea is that they discuss what alternatives are appearing, I have my ideas of alternatives that probably remark at the end of the note. But let's go straight to his words :

We are witnessing a rather sharp change in the drifting world of wargames. It seems that games of "massive battles" in 28mm scale have entered a phase of decline. Perhaps driven by the overflowing unnatural growth of company Games Workshop, which have saturated the market and have demanded increased efforts, both monetary and of time investment to their fans. We are faced with what we see as the decay of a model exploited and if it is not reinvent we have the danger of disappearing (in my humble opinion , the genre of massive battles always have exponents in the market) but if being unseated from his throne as the ruler of the wargaming movement by another kind of games with very different approaches.

There is much speculation about the possible collapse of GW as a dominant company in the industry. Well , that does not cease to be speculation, but what is certain is that new and very tough competitors have emerged, who were able to offer new values to the fans to enjoy games of warfare simulation (either fantastic or historical) with a quality and variety a few years ago we could not even imagine. In recent years , we have witnessed the rise of a type of wargame, which was a minority in old times, and today strives to become the most played type of wargame: the skirmish game. We understand as a skirmish game or skirmish, those representing small clashes between small groups of heterogeneous troops, with very different personalities and varied skills.

Bernohn's Note: This is THE key , when I started wargaming, a game was to play a massive battle (there was no other way). In fact this prejudice that wargaming is to play battles with hundredes of miniatures and with rules incredibly boring.

The large battles games in 28mm scale, requires huge investments of time and (not to mention) money. Many wargamers do not have the time they had when they were teenagers, you know, life goes charging you with responsibilities and you have less time to invest in the hobby. So many players are looking for more dynamic, faster and more interactive games with which to have a good time, to unleash their passion for miniatures games but without having to sacrifice a whole weekend (very complicated when you have to take charge of your business, your own family and other social activities of adulthood).

B's Note : Exactly this is what we play away Fantasy , besides the problems of regulation.

Thus, we have seen that while GW's wargames have been increasing in size to the limits barely manageable by players (so many do not agree on the interpretation of certain aspects of the rules), others have decided to make their games more manageable, less massive but more intense and with interactive battles. We have a clear example of this trend on Bolt Action,, a WWII wargame of Warlord Games. With just over 40 models per side can be played the biggest battles that allows this game system, incorporating tanks, batteries support attacks artillery or bombing, many of the usual suspects of massive wargames, implemented through very fluid and simple rules. Furthermore they have an alternating shift system, wherein along the game turn each player moves a unit in a random order (determined by dice colors drawn randomly from an opaque container to simulate the "fog of battle ") this turns the game into a tremendously tense, immersive and fun experience.

B's N: I love this form of alternating the order, we have used it to play Point Blank (as a house Mod) and it was really good.

Another example of a wargame that focuses on the dynamism in the fantastic scope, Kings of War of Mantic Games. Born from the minds of the old warhammer designers, Kings of war has evolved from a mere clone of a fantasy game to a wargame with its own identity, which has grown in quality, with a simple and effective rules to play big battles without investing huge amounts of time. Mantic Games has not only improved the quality of their products, but that gives an incredibly competitive price, showing that it can offer a quality product without squeezing the player pocket.

KoW game taken from here.

B's N: When I had time and the situation of the customs here improves, I will be starting a Dwarf army to play KoW.

Really, where massive battles develop better is in its natural scale: 15 mm and less. Games as Flames of War in the historical scope, Dystopian Wars in the SteamPunk or Firestorm Armada and Dropzone commander in the science fiction theme are showing that for large battles, the scale allows the game more manageable, more comfortable and equally spectacular.

This Dropzone Commander looks nice!

B's N: I have never tried any of these games. I have a little problem with the low scales...But Firestorm Armada or Distopian Wars have innovative proposals.

But it's actually in the scale of 28-35mm with the skirmish where the evolution is more palpable. From Infinity, one of the games with huge growth in the recent years, to Malifaux, through the great Dead Zone, Deep Wars, Carnevale, Bushido, Ronin, etc... There are already many exponents of a genre that wins fans year after year. Whether you're a fan of Fantasy, Science Siction, Dark games or steampunk, chances are that there is a game of skirmish that suits your needs and tastes. Games that are seeking a way to play different, more focused on tactics, with very limited resources and small-scale but very intense clashes. They are games offering tremendous immersive fun dose, of background and added values to painted miniatures and the creation of scenery.

Infinity bet for interactive gaming system with an active player in its turn, and reactive in the other players turn, so that no player stop to act either in the other players turn. Its futuristic setting, its aesthetic influenced by manga and inspired by the "nearest" science fiction (biomechanical connections, quantum computers, holographic systems, highly developed areas of data, warfare based on existing technology, but much more developed, with some of the fantastic concepts such as the inclusion of some alien race) and the incredible design of the miniatures has caused to be worth upwards a game worth plunge because it has a lot of potential fun to offer to players in addition considerable international extension, to the point of have a system of international tournaments with three different rankings.

Nices miniatures, Nice game system, nice customer care=Infinity

B's N: Infinity attracted me because it has two very good things: very good quality miniatures and a very interesting rule-system. Highly recommended.

Malifaux contrary, moves to simplify the game system, offering a much more digestible rules, while maintaining its strong unique personality that give the grotesque and dramatic design of its miniatures and using decks of poker instead of dice to play. Innovative and original, Malifaux is another great movement within the Skirmish wargame.

B's N: I really like some miniatures of Malifaux, I have the rules out there to read (which are from Manimal). I started reading , but I hung up. The miniatures have a nice quality and here in this area (Buenos Aires) there are people playing it.

Némesis and Carnevale are also great skirmish games with his own original design, they do not drink from the usual pseudo-Tolkenian fantasy, but opt for a completely original background and their own game system and differentiators (like the use of dice 10 in carnevale and band members enhancement system, that sounds much like the legendary Mordheim).

B's N: I do not know much or Carnevale Nemesis, from Nemesis what I saw was some amazing miniatures. They are of the same guys that make Kensei. And from Carnevale I know almost nothing except their miniatures which are really good.

Warmachine and Hordes can still be seen as skirmish games, although the tendency to extend the army size and the larger units (such as Colossals) gets them closer and closer to a battle game. What doubt that today privateer press games are among the most powerful on the market? There are many other great games like Sphere Wars skirmishes, Freebooter 's Fate 1650 a capa y espada, Alkemy, Confrontation (now dead but still perfectly playable and wonderful!), Anima Tactics, Helldorado, Wolsung (steampunk), etc...

1650 from Tercio Creativo, nice miniatures...
B,s N: Here is a link to an interview to Tercio Creativo, one of the first I have made here for the blog (its in spanish, but I guess you might translate well using the translation bar up here in the blog).

I recommend you to search a little, as it is sure that you will find great alternatives Skirmish gender , with little money and a big dose of hope, can bring countless hours of fun on a table.

Exactly, there are many generic rules system that let you play with the miniatures of the companies that you like regardless of the scale. As an example we can name the rules as Disposable Heroes of Iron Ivan Games (or any system of Iron Ivan Games, here another interview), all the rule systems by Ganesha Games (two weeks ago I published an interview to Sfiligoi in this blog), Operation Squad, Impetus Armies of Arcana and a long list of etceteras.
I personally think that there are good games that include miniatures + rules, and there are also separate good miniatures and good rules. The player are today in a path that opens and allows us something that we did not have (or did not realize): FREEDOM. And that is always good to choose based on the thumbnails or the regulations that you like or based on the recommendations, there is a giant world to know. It is time to abandon the carrot and begin to walk our own path as players.

Thanks to the people of Mirmidonia who gave us the snapshot on miniatures games out of the crossroads of Games Workshop. Always good to hear from shopkeepers ( as they say over there ). Hugs and we continue to read.

Salieron los perfiles nuevos (Bolts y Tarik empapotado)/New Troops Profiles (Bolts and Tarik)

The new profiles are here (not here in my screen, not here in the place where I am writing this post, but they are here). The new bolts and the new big, huge, almost a bouncer Tarik Mansuri. As I am not a Pano player I am not aware of the true novelty in it. But my friend Joko was really happy about it. And the Haqqislam players I know were happy with the new miniature of Tarik.

Here are the new profiles/Veamos los nuevos perfiles

Bolts
At first sight, they are a very versatile troop, very interesting to link them (they have a misile launcher!!!). They have low armor (2), but they are really cheap (with 120 points you can have a nice offensive-defensive link).

Tarik
Mmm, I have been asking if it is a linkable character, and its not so its like a miniTag as a friend has said. The miniature, is really really good, I guess the idea is to reach CC. My Haqqifriends told me that he is going to be linkable when the Khawarij sectorial sees light.

Today we have seen the news of this february, they were really tasty: Geckos, the Neoterra Starter (with the new troop the Bolts), another Bounty Hunter, Neema a tohaa character and the new Tarik Mansuri (who has been taking steroids in the meantime because now he has grown to the size of Ayax).

Imagenes/Pictures:

Well, telling the truth I had initially liked a lot the painting level of Tarik Mansuri, but he is HUGE, so it seems (to me) that he has an exaggerated size. From these miniatures that had seen light today, the one that I like most is the Tohaa character which is incredibly similar to the drawing that was in the book (the drawing which is up in this page).
Now we are looking for the next month news, which I hope will have some Morats, or the Zerat with Flamethrower or the Suryat box, who knows...).
