Army 5

Well finally the new Army of the guys from Devils Team have seen light. And it worked at times. I have seen Failure to load the profiles very often, I guess it must be because so many people are trying to access the database.

In the meantime we have the aleph Toolbox.

B.
When it works, it looks very nice and runs very well on Ubuntu. I guess in a few days after the fever had passed we can enjoy it.

Interview with Usul (ORA), Entrevista Usul (ORA)

Two years ago we started to play infinity. By this time we used a java based program wich help us to create our lists. This was the ORA (paraphrasing the Automatic Reaction Order, but in spanish). This program has not a nice graphic design but it was useful, easy to install, an runed in every platform. So it was our first choice. Remember kids, that by that times, there was no Devils Team program for you to run in your computer, only in the page and was a kick in the nuts.

So, I get in touch with the programmer behind the program, the deux ex machina: USUL...

  • Mejor apariencia gráfica (prescindo... no tengo tiempo)

Saludos.
B.

  • Hi, where are you from? What is your nickname?

I am from Valencia, and my nickname USUL, I use it allways since the begginins of my internet life. Usul is the nickname of Paul Atreides in the novel Dune, is the name that the Fremen puts to his leader.

  • I guess you are a wargamer, Which games have you played? If you would have to choose three games that you love, wich ones would it be?

I have more than 30 years playing to every kind of wargames, of both miniature and tabletop (I have a nice colection of them). The three ones that I love most now are:

Miniatures:

Tabletop:

  • Do you play infinity often? Wich faction do yo play with? Why have you chosen that faction? Is there a nice ammount of players there where you play?

I play a little in truth, from time to time, there are many games and little time. Since it appeared I play with Yu Jing, because the miniatures are really superb. In my club there are twenty players of infinity, so it is easy to play and arrange tournaments. In Valencia there is also a high number of players and its still growing.

  • Among the programs to create lists of infinity, I really like that your program runs in linux. This is very good for me. What do you think your program lacks? What would you add in the future?

ORA lacks two things:

-Weapon and habilities resume of the chosen troops (we are working on it)
-Better graphic appearance (I pass, I dont have the time to change it)

  • I love the fact that it is free, is the code open? Why?

The code is closed, it has a lot of hours of work and it is registered, protected and patented. I need to save my owner as author in case of anyone plans to make many with it. This is not opposed to the fact that it is free.

  • Have you programed the ORA itself only you? Is it the only program you have created to play games or you have others to create army lists?

The programing is a issue of two, but we have a stuff of colaborators wich tests and feed data.
I have my whole life making progams for games, but ORA and TRS are the only two that I have registered (you may downloaded from my blog). The rest are just for friends in a club level and lets say they are not pretty.
TRS is a controler to play tournaments in a swiss sistem:

  • Do you have a page or a blog where we could see your painted miniatures?

But I dont have many pictures on it, but is the only places where you could see them. One tday I woud take pictures and put them on it but I have more than 2000 miniatures and I dont know even where to start from?

This interview I have done last year, and I delay the poste. By This April, in the spanish forum, Usul informed that the program wont be updated and was take from the page. Many thanks to Usul and the team that program it, and thanks again for the interview...

interview V from the Devil team (Infinity Army), entrevista a los chicos de Devil Team.

I have known the Infinity Army when it was only in the online page of the game. In that times it was almost imposible to use because it took many minutes to be loaded. By then I was using the infinity creator or the ORA. But there was a day when the Devil Team guys made an executable program ready to use in any portable. Now is the mainly creator I use, it has some compatibility issues, it is not updated, but its very very useful.
I wanted to get in contact with the devil team guys, it took some time because they are buzzy guys, but finally they could get in contact with me. Thanks!

Lets Jump to the interview right away:

  • ¿Who are the Devil Team?
Devil team is a group of friends, and a game group. It was founded back in the 92, due to a live role game event as the Ferrensil Devils, but when we started our first web page (1996) we were the Devil Team. We work as a club, but we are  not a club nor an association. WE ARE AN IDEA.

Bernohn: We are an idea, what a statement...

  • I guess you are wargamers, which wargames have you played? Which three wargames you love most?
We started playing Role Games (and we ar still playing), and we have played almost a little bit of everything: from tabletop games, to miniature games, and the most pure historic wargame. If I had to choose personally three games, I would definitely keep Infinity as a wargame, the leyend of the five rings in role games, and BattleTech as a piece of our past.

  • Do you play Infinity often?, Which faction do you play with? Why did you choose this faction? Is there a nice number of infinity players where you live?
Well, everyoune uses his time as he can, so the ones who play less or more. I (V) have not so much time to play, but I try to have some games from time to time. As I play often as refereee, if dont play, at least I keep updated.
I play with and only with Nomads, I have choosen Nomads basically because they were cyberpunk hackers who remembered a character I hade in Cyberpunk (RPG), a NetRunner. I loved the art and the concept of the interventor, and also the philosophy of this faction in the Infinity Universe. In the group we have a player for each faction, and where I live we have, luckily, a thirty players group. So we are not short of players, of course.
  • What I think is THE best of your program is that it has a high graphic level, it is very nice as it was when it only ran on the web page. Now you can download and run it on your PC is the only one I use on my laptop. After sweeten the pill a bit, what do you think the program lacks?, That is, what would you add in the future?

We are currently working on the version 4 and we want to add some new features. What happens is that this is a very slow work due to lack of time available, so we will be slowly integrating things. As a programmer I think that adding things never ends.

  • I love the fact that it's free, is the code open or closed? Why?

The code is closed precisely because we have had attempts to "improper appropriation". Army started as a tool, not as a commercial product. By closing the code we want to ensure it stays that way.
Precisely keeping it free makes complicated certain upgrades wich would require maintenance.

  • Did UVE program it,? Is the only programed for games or have more programs to create playlists of other games?

I (V) am the main programmer, but in its creation, programming and testing have also take part James Arkham, Athena, Zoe, Gary and Belkira Arkham.

We have been doing Armys since the 5th edition of Warhammer. Only Warhammer,  Army Infinity and this has seen the light. They are tools we create for us and we have no objection to sharing them with others, as we believe that we are all fellow hobbists.

Bernohn: I completely agree with that!

The first work in MS-DOS and was ready for High Elves. Then came Silvan, Dwarves, Skaven and  Bretonnia. With the beginning of the 6th edition we were taking off an army  for each army that was published. Privately has been Armys Warhammer 40000, BattleTech, Mordheim and tools have been developed and even simulators Lord of the five rings or Twilight Imperium 3rd ed. among others.

  • Where can we see your models (page, or something like that)?

My painting
level is negative, so my miniatures do not deserve anyone even bother to look at them. Zoe is the best painter in the DT.

  • Another one, what do you think about the other two programs, the ARO and the infinity creator?

I think it's great that there are different alternatives that everyone can use the one you like. I think that says a lot about Infinity that there is plurality of applications (and without having to hack anything).

=)

Infinity Creator, interview to Alan Hietala (Entrevista al programador de Infinity Creator)

This is the first of the three interviews to the designers of programs to create infinity lists.

The first Army creator that I used was the Infinity Pool, it was simple, fast, you dont have to wait for anything. It was very useful and easy to use. Its a web page where you may make your lists, store them, print them, and see other lists. The advantages are that runs on pretty much everything if you have internet, and that is very updated. You may print and you may also search for different lists. The bad thing is that you need Internet and that it does not runs pretty well on Android OS.

Lets continue with the interview...

  • Who are you? Where are you? Are you a wargamer?
My name is Alan Hietala a 30 year old software engineer from Toronto, Canada. I've been a casual wargamer since a fairly young age.

Bernohn: You may find Alan here
  • Which wargames have you played?
Started out with warhammer fantasy battle back in the 90's with a Chaos Dwarf army, the earth shaker is one beast of a cannon. Added playing warhammer 40k with an Imperial guard mortar based army after that (I have a thing for large artillery pieces). I also have a Lizardman WH Fantasy army that I play every once in a while.

Chaos Dwarf
Earthshaker Cannon

Before really getting into Infinity I was an avid AT-43 player and ran http://at-43addict.com before Rackham went out of business. I have all the released armies and the starter sets for each of the Cogs and Oni.

Cogs (AT 43)

I still play occasionally and my favourite army is the Karmans. Currently most of my wargaming is centred around Infinity. I'm primarily an Ariadna player but also have a force of Yu Jing as well.
  • Which language uses your program? the program is open source? Why have you done this program?
Infinity Creator is written in Ruby on rails and I built it to learn the platform as well as have an army creator that would load quickly have a clean print view and be accessible anywhere in case I forgot my army list when I got to a gaming session.
Currently the program isn't open source. I actually would like to open it up (I have no plans to make any money from it) but haven't taken the time to get in touch with Corvus Belli in order to work through licensing issues. The images on the site are Corvus Belli copyright and the rules for validation are their intellectual property. These are some of the legal issues surrounding open-sourcing the app in its current state. The site exists because Corvus Belli allows it to, if they took a stance like Games Workshop on their Intellectual Property I'm sure their lawyers would have contacted me a long time ago.
This is another reason I really like Corvus Belli, They don't go out of their way to prevent the community from helping their game grow in popularity.

Bostria y Gutier

Bernohn: Yes, the CB guys are really nice!
  • What would I like to add to the program?
I would like to create a better mobile app experience for the application. I started this a long time ago but never really got anywhere. Everything is mobile or tablet now. The needing to print out an army list is silly, you should just be able to get it on your phone and have all the weapons tables right there. This would let you use the app without a connection as well. The app could save the data locally on the phone, then when it did have a connection it could sync with the server and update your lists.

  • I have tried to use the page in a tablet but I couldnt.
When I wrote the original infinity creator, tablets were just starting to come out. I never really went back to update the interface to work well on them. I always have intended to create a better mobile / tablet experience but it has been a matter of finding the time to do it.
  • Do you have other pages for other games?
I run http://at-43addict.com but haven't updated it in a long time since Rakham went out of business. It was a shame because I really liked that game.

  • Do you play infinity? which faction? why do you choose your faction? Do you have any page with pictures of your miniatures?
I'm currently playing infinity with my Ariadna army. I also have a Yu Jing army but my Ariadna force is the primary one I use. I really like the low tech underdog nature of Ariadna, they're survivors, tough and make up for their lack of high tech weaponry with stealth and special abilities. Not having to be worried about EMP and Hackers is nice too.
I picked Yu Jing as my secondary army because I like a lot of their miniatures. I wanted something with a lot of armour to offset the low tech of Ariadna.
I have some pictures from a while ago up at: Yu jing and Ariadna

  • What do you think of the other two programs (ARO) and the Army of the Devil Team?
I've never used ARO so I can't comment on it.
Infinity Army from devil team looks good and has better validation for Human sphere (linked units for example) but I don't like how you need to use an army code to load a list you're working on and I don't like that it takes a long time to load up.
I took the KISS (keep it simple stupid) approach to Infinity Creator and it appeals to a certain set of people. ARO and Infinity Army appeal to a different set of users which is great. I'm just happy that more people are playing infinity. I don't care what tool they use, just that they continue to support this great game.
  • How long did it take you to have a working version of the program?
It took me a few weeks of evening / weekend work to get the initial prototype up and running and I incrementally improved it over the next 6 months in response to feedback. I had to do a bit of work when human sphere hit and I added an admin mode that would let certain users update the new sectorial lists.
  • How many people are playing infinity in toronto now (approximately)?
I'm not really sure what the player base is like here in Toronto I know there are a few local gaming stores that carry Infinity but there isn't a huge player base from what I understand. I mostly play with a few friends and haven't looked into organizing any larger scale events.

  • Thanks for the program, because I have used it very much, and from time to  time I use with friends in order to share lists or talk about lists!
You're most welcome I'm glad you find it useful!

This interview is short, but I the idea was simple: to know more about this great program and know about its creator. There will be two more comming...
Thanks a lot Alan!
