Disposable Heroes Interview, entrevista

In the Historic wargames day from the last march, I discovered a game system that liked me a lot. Fast, very detailed, wich allows you to play with miniatures of any scale (14, 20, 28 mm) and I decided to start with the Russians. Now I don’t know if 28 or 20 mm, because some warlord games miniatures liked me a lot. So I get in touch with the game creators to make an interview. And here we are.

  • Who are Iron Ivan Games, and most important who are the writers of DH?

We are three friends and gamers. Chalfant Conley, Jayson Gardner, and myself, Keith Stine. DH was written originally by Chalfant and I. Jayson came on board when he wrote our Spanish Civil War supplement Primera Battala and has been with us ever since. He is also an artist and has done all of our cover and interior art since he joined us, which believe me, has been a big improvement.

Note of Bernohn: For me the spanish civil war was a revolution, or something like that, the workers were armed, the people was armed against facism. But Stalin doesnt support it and he let it die...
I strongly reccomend two books: Homage to catalonia and Man's Hope, the first one is more critic than the second one, because the rout was closer...

  • Apart from your game which other wargames have you played?

We have a game club and regularly play lots of different periods and rules sets. Fire &Fury, DBA, Fistful of TOWS, Age of Eagles, Fire as She Bears, Check Your Six, General Quarters III, and some others.

  • Do you study history?

Yes, in fact, I am working on my PhD in history and have been teaching as an adjunct instructor at a local community college (including a class on WWII) since 2005. Chalfant also has a degree in history. Jayson reads a lot and is smart enough not to waste his money on a useless degree :)

from batallasdeamericalatina.blogspot.com
  • Where are you from?

Chalfant and I are both from York, Pennsylvania USA, while Jayson is from Lancaster Pennsylvania USA. I currently live in Lancaster as well. Our game club is in York and since Jayson and I and a few others live in Lancaster, we have a yearly tradition of playing a War of the Roses (York vs Lancaster) tournament using DBA. I play on the York side. The Lancastrians have not won a tournament yet and the trophy is safe in York (and will continue to remain).

  • Whats are the strong points of your game, the ones that you believe gamers fall in love with?

I like to think the strong points of our systems is the intuitiveness of the mechanics and the way that many of the same core concepts apply across the systems. For example, movement, firing, and morale generally function the same between all of the systems in at least a familiar enough form that it is easy for players to pick up. Also, people seem to appreciate the way we abstract certain things to allow for realistic outcomes when tactical ideas are applied. For example, a lot of people really seem to appreciate the way infantry movement is handled in Disposable Heroes or the way firing muzzle loading weapons is abstracted in This Very Ground.

  • Is there something you would like to change in your game, or something you would like to add?

Where do I begin? Haha. There are a few things I would do differently were we to release a new edition or if I had the chance to do it all over. The main thing for me is the way that AP wounding works. I would probably go back and change it so that the AP of weapons is reduced by cover. So if an AP 8 weapon is firing at a target in hard cover (-4), it would reduce the AP down to 4 (AP 8 - 4 cover = AP 4). Either that, or I would use the Point Blank wounding system with DH. One of our biggest criticisms is that DH is too bloody. I think this would address that issue in a way that fits into our overall design philosophy. I know Chalfant has talked about wanting to redesign the way vehicles fire at infantry in buildings as another example. There are lots of other little tweaks here and there that we think of and then quickly forget, haha. As far as things I would like to add...I had the fortune to be able to add most of my ideas into the Point Blank system such as an Activation Pool, the new wounding system, a lot of extra rules for vehicles, Training & Experience, and Skills. Writing Point Blank really allowed me a lot of creative license and I enjoyed that immensely.

  • Apart from DH and Point Blank do you have other games systems? Which ones?

We have systems for WWI (Price of Glory), Moderns (Seek Out, Close With, and Destroy), Vietnam (The Long Road South), The French & Indian War (This Very Ground), Zombies (No More Room in Hell), Pulp (Where Heroes Dare), Spanish Civil War (Primera Battala), The Rhodesian War (Man Among Men) as well as army books for WWII, several scenario books, and lots of cheap PDFs such as scenarios or other quirky or useful things.

  • I played DH two weeks ago at a Historical Game Day in Buenos Aires. For me the game was very interesting because of the lack of a scale (15, 20, 28 mm), the wide range of miniatures you can use for playing, and the fact that it was very easy to learn. When did you originally release the rules? It takes time to get to the point the game is right now (lots books on WWII, one on the Spanish Revolution etc.)...

Chalfant and I wrote the original system back in 2001. We started out playing the old Yaquinto/88 WWII armor system and it was fun, but not quite the scope or style we had in mind. So we decided to write our own. We started working on some ideas at a local game store and just tinkered with different rules. I came up with some basic rules for infantry and he came up with some vehicle rules and it just kind of progressed from there. It came together pretty quickly and we worked really well together. His strengths covered my weaknesses and vice versa. He is a whiz with math and how he worked out the armor and gun penetration system still impresses me to this day. After an original rough copy printed in 2002, we took the system to some of the local HMGS conventions here in Lancaster and ran games of DH. people responded really well and it inspired us to form the company and publish the rules. Thus in 2003 or 2004 Iron Ivan Games was born. DH is now in its third edition and we have sold more than 5,000 copies of that book alone.

Yaquinto 88'

Two facts that might be of interest: When we designed DH, I had only ever played Warhammer 40,000 and a few games of Yaquinto/88 WWII. Most of my inspiration for the rules design and concepts came more from the WWII computer game Close Combat rather than other wargame systems. Chalfant was also a big fan of the WWII computer game Steel Panthers and ideas from both those games are part of our game design concepts. If you play or are familiar with Close Combat, the different infantry movement "speeds" from that game inspired the basic DH movement rules among other things.

Also, the name Iron Ivan comes from a playtest session of the rules. Before we had the "Man Alone" rule which prevents lone men from advancing towards the enemy, we were playing a game where a squad of Soviets were down to just a Sgt. with a submachine gun. I was playing the Germans and I couldn't kill this guy. He ran all over the table gunning down hapless Germans and creating havoc. Chal called him "Iron Ivan" and it gave us enough of a laugh that the name just kind of stuck.
  • A friend of mine wants me to ask you why you don't sell the PDF versions of the books as you have done with  Urrahh!, because here it is difficult to buy the books themselves whereas a PDF is much easier.

I see your point, and it has been asked by lots of people over the past year or so. Actually, we have Urrahh!, Blood & Guts (US army book), Go Forward Together (British army book), and soon to be added Red Sun Red Death (Pacific Theater book) as PDFs to our online store. These have all been added as PDFs as we have run out of hard copies of them. Some of the decision to release these PDFs is based on the simple fact that we don't have enough money to reprint the books right away, and some of it is that the books that we sell less of we have decided not to reprint. However, when it comes to the main rule books, we are reluctant to release them as PDFs for two reasons: because we still have a lot of hard copies in stock and second, we feel that we can control our content better if there are only hard copies of the main rules out there. With the nature of PDFs, once you release them, you have very little control over how it is distributed. People will  send them to their friends, or copies of the PDF will inevitably end up on the internet as a free download somewhere. With a hard copy only, this is much harder to do (though it still happens). So some of it is just us protecting our intellectual property. That's probably not an answer many people like to hear, and in this day and age, perhaps that is an outdated mindset. There are companies that release everything as PDF and they do just fine. Call us stubborn I guess, but we want to release our content when we are ready to do so and in a way we are comfortable with. Still, as things develop, more of our stuff is being released as PDF, so at some point we might end up releasing the main rules. But for now, we just don't see it as part of our business model.

As a side note, don't be afraid to order from us directly. We ship flat rate to anywhere in the world, and USPS shipping is very reliable and pretty quick.

  • Do you have any new books coming out you would like to tell us about?

We are working on a set of Sci-Fi rules. Chalfant has been working on this set for a while now and it is going through the late stages of playtesting. It will be a generic Sci-Fi small unit skirmish system much like Disposable Heroes. There will be a background universe included as well as several army lists for human and non human forces as part of that background. As a generic system, it will allow you to game any Sci-Fi setting you can think of and includes lots of weapons, technology, and vehicles (hover, anti-grav) and other cool stuff. You would be able to develop your own worlds and setting or translate any other setting you want into the rules. The game will be called Zero Sum Oblivion. I have been working on some 28mm Pig Iron Miniatures to use with it and Chalfant has been painting up some 15mm stuff. I think fans of DH and even people who have never played our rules will like it!

I have been working on some ideas for a short PDF supplement for Weird WWII. So far, there are Walkers, Armored Suits, and...ghosts.

  • What are you reading now? Which three books would you recommend to the readers?
Right now I am reading a whole ton of stuff for my PhD classes. I am taking a class called "Atlantic World" and a class on Colonial America (17th Century). Between the two we have read close to two dozen books. My favorites so far are Empires of the Atlantic World (which compares British and Spanish colonies) by J.H. Elliot, and The Ordeal of the Longhouse by Daniel Richter (about the Iroquois). The only title I had a chance to read this semester that is military history related is The First Way of War: American War Making on the Frontier by John Greiner which I am only part way through. Before I began my PhD I used to read a lot for pleasure...now, I either don't have time or some of the joy is lost in the avalanche of stuff I have to read. I am liking the program though, and I feel like I have expanded my knowledge a lot in this semester alone. The discussions that historians have within the field are so much different than the way that gamers discuss history, and I have begun to really appreciate both for their differences. For pleasure and as a way to shut my brain off, I have been reading a lot of fantasy stuff like the Shannara series and now R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt series (again). I keep those books on my Kindle e-reader next to the toilet :)

Bernohn: Great! I like readings at the toilet! Thanks for the recomendations!

  • What music do you like to hear and which 3 discs or bands would you recommend to the readers?

As far as music, I feel like my taste in music is stuck in 1997. I grew up listening to 80s American and British punk, then got into 90s alternative, then eventually into 90s Indie rock and post punk. Some bands and albums though I never tire of. I will always have My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless", Dinosaur Jr.'s "Bug" and "You're Living All Over Me", as well as Fugazi's "Repeater" and "In On The Kill Taker" on my iPod at all times. Lately I have been enjoying some local bands and sounds (Lancaster Pennsylvania!) such as a 2 piece band called 1994! and a band called Dutchland Diesel. At one point I was in a punk band, and we played all ages shows all over Pennsylvania and elsewhere. and it was a lot of fun playing music. I don't really miss it much though :)

When I'm not listening to local Indie rock or 90s Alternative, 90s Indie rock bands like Modest Mouse, Sunny Day Real Estate, Built To Spill, and Braid are playing in the background. The only new music I like is something like The Killers or The Faint. Though I really like Mumford and Sons folk sounds.

Bernohn: Many band I didnt Know at all, I will try to watch them in youtube. Thanks!
  • Does Iron Ivan Games or you have Twitter accounts?

No, Iron Ivan Games nor any of us in the company have a Twitter account. We are on Facebook though and keep in touch with our customers and fans primarily through our Yahoo Group. With the nature of the slow release schedule of a rules company, having a Twitter account just didn't seem to make sense.

Thanks for the interview, I really enjoyed answering your questions. Let mw know if there is anything I need to clarify or if you have any other questions,

Thanks!!

Keith

Bernohn: It was nice to think and then to translate the whole interview. Thanks! (I have bought some 28 mm russian soldiers and the DH rulebook, so in a month or two I will be playing).

Somos tres amigos y jugadores. Chalfant Conley, Jayson Gardner y yo, Keith Stine.

Fire &Fury, DBA, Fistful of TOWS, Age of Eagles, Fire as She Bears, Check Your Six, General Quarters III y algunos otros.

Elliot, y "The Ordeal of the Longhouse" de Daniel Richter (acerca del pueblo iroqués).

Siempre tendré My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless", Dinosaur Jr.'s "Bug" y "You're Living All Over Me", así como Fugazi's "Repeater" y"In On The Kill Taker" en mi iPod todo el tiempo.
