Ganesha Games Interview (Andrea Sfiligoi)/ Entrevista a Andrea Sfiligoi

First in spanish then in english (scroll down, dont be lazy).

¡Muchos!

También me encantan Advanced Fighting Fantasy, Tunnels and Trolls and retroclones de D&D.

Torriani y Sfiligoi (centro y derecha respectivamente)

Well, I get to known Andrea Sfiligoi for Nap (a member of the forum Wargamez) when talking about skirmish alternatives to Mordheim and he talked about Songs of Blades and Heroes. After that I search for some videos about the game and I found it very interesting. I have never played yet, but this is some of the things I want to do this year. The rules are very simple and easy going, fun to play. They have now rules for different scenarios as Arturian, SciFi, Modern War, etc.  Some time ago I had contacted him for an interview and here we are. So, lets start with it...

  • Who are/is Ganesha games?
Ganesha games  is just me and a bunch of friends and other authors who write books based on my existing rules. The name Ganesha Games comes from the fact that I am of Hindu religion and Ganesha (the elephant-headed god) is a good deity to meditate on when you are starting a business.

  • When did it started (and how)?

I begun publishing games in July 2007, but I have been writing and designing games since I was 12 years old, and I inflicted a home-made boardgame called Pirate Island on my friends.

  • Apart from Songs of Blades and heroes, which other wargames have you published?
Note of me (Bernohn): before the answer, Ganesha is famous for his game Songs of Blades and Heroes, a very simple and easy going fantasy skirmish game with a few dice throws and a lot of easyness to play it. Here is a video of it from other guys wich I have seen and help me to understand the sistem.

Many! Song of Blades and Heroes was my first published one, but I have also written stuff like Mutants and Death Ray Guns, Fear and Faith and BattleSworn, my latest creation. All can be seen on my site. I have also written two titles for Osprey Publishing: Of Gods and Mortals, which becomes available these days, and A Fistful of Kung Fu.

Playing Drums and Shakos
  • The system of SoBH is a pretty much innovative, good, simple and playable system, how do you come up with this?

I tried to write a simple game for my local club where fantasy was not popular at all. I just wrote a game that was playable in under one hour on a small table with very few figures. The idea was replying "yes you can play" to all the typical objections: I do not have enough figures, I do not have time/space, etc. I also wanted a simple system that dads could play with their children.

Father and son playing?

  • By which other systems have you been inspired?
Difficult to say, I was playing Warmaster at the time, so maybe the activation system comes a bit from the leadership rolls in Warmaster.  The combat system is certainly inspired by DBA , the only game that my club was playing at the time, so I chose something already familiar to the guys in the club.

  • Apart from your page where else may I buy your books?

My pdfs are sold almost anywhere PDFs are sold, WargameVault, Wargamedownloads, SaberSedge, Paizo... My print books are on Amazon  and Lulu.

A game of Mutants and Death Rays from here

  • What do you think about other skirmish ruleset as Chain Reaction, Point blank or infinity?

I am really familiar only with Chain Reaction which I love. A very unusual and innovative system. In general, I like systems that try to be innovative.

  • What rolegames have influenced you? Have you written role games?
GURPS is a system I have used for many years. I also love Advanced Fighting Fantasy, Tunnels and Trolls, and retroclones of D&D. I have written at least three rolegames, the ones based on Song of Blades is called Tales of Blades and Heroes. There is another one I wrote circa 2008 called Familiars in which the players play the role of a witch's familiars. Another one, that i am currently writing in Italian and will come in 2014, is called Kingdom of the Blind and as far as I know is the first rpg that must be played in the dark.

  • You are italian as Alessio CAvatore, do you think this might influence you as a game designer? How?
I do not see myself as typically Italian, I do not particularly like my country and I do not feel a strong connection with the mindset of people here. I am a mix of cultures, my mother's mother was German and my father's father came from what is today Slovenia. It is true that there is a strong creativity here, not only Alessio Cavatore but also authors like Sergio Laliscia (who is my expert on the horse and musket period), Massimo Torriani and his WW2 game Operation Squad, and Lorenzo Sartori with Impetus.

Alessio Cavatore
Alessio is the famous game designer formerly in GW, now in Mantic and in his own company, Sergio Laliscia is the writer of the Drums and Shakos, a Ganesha ruleset to play with Napoleonics, and Torriani as he says is the writer of Operation Squad.
  • I always ask the people I interview to recommend me three books they have loved or they want to recommend, three games (of any kind), and three music albums...

I'm not very good at this because I love many different things. and I have other hobbies than wargaming and roleplaying (I watch lots of movies, I am an archer and I grow my own fruit). Most of the gaming I do is on my titles for playtest duties, so it's been years since I played something not written by me. So probably I'm just naming the last good books/games I happened to read. Anyway:

Books:

Games:

Albums:

I do not listen to full albums, I prefer to buy one song here and another there, or to listen to whatever is on youtube in the Celtic/ Goth Metal/Pop genres. I like ballads, and songs that tell a story.
Or I just listen to geek film scores. Conan the Barbarian is a favorite.
I recommend to check out Lauren O'Connell on youtube/Itunes.
I can't write music but I've written lyrics professionally when I was working on children's television series many years ago.

Thanks for the interview.
Andrea

It was a pleasure to interview Andrea, he is an interesting guy among the wargaming comunity because of his game (SoBH) and the other ambientations from Napoleonics to SciFi. I hope this helps to let you, my dear readers, know him and to awake the curiosity to his games. Search in internet the reviews or videos of his games, buy the pdfs and try them. I will be tryng Swordplay in the next weeks, but after that, I will be buying some ruleset to test it for the blog with friends.

Playing sealed with friends, Jugando limitado con amigos (Theros)

We used to buy a box of bosters to play sealed with friends. In this case we have bought a box of theros bosters and we have gathered with Diego, Astraud, Argalion, Joko, Ale and me (Bernohn). The idea is simple, we buy a boster box and we divide the 36 boosters among the six of us and play all against all.

In this time I havent had any planeswalker, and the green (my favorite colour) was really really bad, so I had to use black and blue (aghhhh)...

The deck that I had created was//La lista de cartas era
  • 2 Opaline Unicorn
  • 2 Nimbus Naiad
  • 2 Omen Speaker
  • 2 Dissolve
  • 1 Prognostic Sphinx (the Bomb)
  • 1 Aqueos Form
  • 1 Stymied Hopes
  • 1 Triton Shorethief
  • 1 Voyage end
  • 1 Bentic Giant
  • 1 Wavecrash Triton
  • 1 Vaporskin
  • 2 Baneful Eidolon
  • 2 Fethide Minotaur
  • 1 Returned Phalanxs
  • 1 Sip of Hemlock
  • 1 Asphodel Wanderer
  • 1 Gray Merchant of Asphodel
  • 1 March of the Returned
  • 1 Lash of the whip
  • 8 Swamps
  • 9 Islands

The deck relied in the little control and the bombs: the sphinx and the big guy with hexproof. I played first against a GR of Ale, wich was hard, but ended 2-1, then against Diego and his GR, again I win 2-1. I was going good, but, I played against Santiago and his UB and although I won the first match, he won the other two, so I was going bad again. Then I played against Joko who finished me pretty quick (2-0). And at last I play against Guille and it was 1-1 and we had to go to our homes, so we decided by a dice (I won it). So I finished third with 3-2.

Ork Girlz Russian Alternative (Painted)

Well some months ago I had done an unboxing of the Dwarf Hero and the Furious Ork Girlz from Russian Alternative. Here are the girls painted by Berto for the blog. The miniatures are highly detailed, and are asking you to paint them. I recommend them for the Fantasy Armies, because you migh use them as heroines or base troop.

Russian Alternative Interview: miniatures from Mother Russia with Love...

By september or so I was reading our miniature-guys mailing list and Berto send a link to some nice and good looking miniatures, they were all ork girls wich were nicely sculpted. It was something strange to see ork girls so I look for the name of the producer and I went to Russian alternative. The page I have found was interesting, nice fantastic miniatures in the range of 28 mm (or so, because it seams more like 30 or 32mm). So, as allways I got in touch with them, and here is the little interview about this people. Hope you like it!

  • Who are you? Where are you from? (Russia is Big)
Our Company produces miniature models, which can be used to play many board games or simply be collected by people passionate about miniatures of all types. The company was established not long ago, and for now this is practically a coalition of people loving to play board games, and wishing to input something of their own into developing miniature models as works of art. We are trying to create something unique, based primarily on our own taste, and knowledge about various board games. We are based in Moscow, the beautiful capital of Russia, and here we create, produce and stock our full product range.

Moscow, Russia, far far away from here but who may deny that you have a beautiful country?

  • Your name is Russian Alternative, alternative to which miniature range?
The name of our Company has an interesting background. Well, Russian is obvious – all company founders are Russian, and patriotism is a good thing to follow! And about Alternative there are several points.

Firstly, we are not trying to produce the substitution to existing miniatures, produced by other companies. We produce an “alternative” to all existing and yet-to-be-made miniatures, any of them, suitable for many board games – we suggest only our own view. We are offering players and painters to buy something unique, rare and exclusive. We also offer an assortment of accessories like helmets, banners, spears, swords, etc., which we include in our sets as optional elements.

Barbarian Girl, guau!

And secondly, it is well known that there is such type of art (music, films, and paintings) as “alternative”. We produce modern, progressive miniatures, with high definition and great attention to detail, we nonetheless rely not only on current trends, but also on “background”, it is extremely important to us that everything in a miniature has a balance – design, detailed elaboration, quality of material, size and compliance with fantasy background. Our company works with best Russian sculptors and painters, the amount of which, we hope, will keep growing with time. They use all their experience and skill to create beautiful, useful and easy-to-use miniatures for different board games. And even though not everything we do is a success, but we are a young company and we try to take into consideration both our mistakes and our customers preferences.

That is a philosophy, I like this kind of companies wich are small and young, because good thins tend to appear there...
  • You have elves, dwarves (of both: chaotic and good ones), barbarians, chaos warriors, orcs, which other races do you plan to release?
Well, in Fantasy style we have Vampires coming out in the nearest future, but overall we plan to produce miniature of all types, including Sci-Fi, World War and many others.

  • Your miniatures seem to have great quality, are you the sculptor?
We have several sculptors working with us on different projects – all of them are really talented and simply very good guys!  Mostly, our miniatures are sculpted by Kirill Kanaev (Yellow_One) and Rozenberg Maxim (Rozmax). All miniatures are sculpted for The Russian Alternative Company.

  • Who are your miniature painters? Some of the miniatures are really good painted...
We tend to hire several painters to work with us on our projects. We are very lucky to have access to some really talented guys! One of our painters is the sculptor of many of our miniatures and one of the best painters in the world by CMON rating Kirill Kanaev (Yellow_One) – we simply adore his work and are very proud to work with him. Also, we have works painted by an amazing Russian painter Nadezhda River.

Chaotic dwarves

  • Which is the material the miniatures are made of?
Our miniatures are made of pure lead free alloys, predominantly tin and zinc. All our products are safe to use and do not contain any toxic ingredients.

  • The miniatures have a clear fantasy style; do you plan to have sci fi miniatures too?
Probably yes. Because we are collectors and gamers ourselves we first of all make those minis that we ourselves are most interested in, and for now it is Fantasy. We are not too knowledgeable about sci-fi or other styles yet, but we certainly are working on it!

Thats is a wizard!

  • Will you create a set of rules to play with your miniatures? Is this in your ideas?
We produce our miniatures as collectibles and intended for people who would like more variety in their hobby. At present we have no plans to create our own gaming platform. But at present we are closely working with professional writers on detailing the background of our “alternative” miniature world and it is impossible to definitely say what will happen in future – who knows?

  • Which wargames do you play, or have you played?
We have our own gaming club in Moscow and there people play mostly Warhammer FB, 40K and Lords of The Ring. We also very much enjoy playing Confrontation.

  • Time of recommendations, this blog ask the people interviewed to give as three recommendations on each three topics: Games you love, books you have read and music you have heard.
Among the games I love we have: Confrontation, Activity, Volleyball.
Music, I like the classics: Queen, The Beatles and Adele...

This is the end of this interview, but this week you will see some miniatures of this brand painted by this blog. This miniatures are really great.

B.

Abrazos.

Games Workshop cosecha lo que siembra (GW reaps what he sows)

It seams (the news are running everywhere in the net) that the GWs stock values had drop 24% last week. I am not an economist, and I now a little of finances, but when they drop so much this generates mistrusts and continue to drop values because people tend to sell. But this is also a time of changes and open doors to players...

This news have two sides (good and bad), good thing is that in the end the whole of the GW policies which have made many players to abandon this game is having an effect in the sales first and then in the value of the company then. The bad is that usually this kind of problems are faced with the same solution: workers fired...

So, What do we have in front of us? A company with many behaviours that clearly harmed the game thinking only in the profits that may come. But also the hobby faces an ideal oportunity to know other games, from the most famous as Warmahordes, Infinity, Malifaux, Kings of war, Dust to the historic range (wich are much cheaper than warhamme), and ending in games as Xwing, Firestorm Armada, Flames of war, and so many etceteras among I would like to name Iron Ivan Games, with its many many rulesets for different periods.

If gw ends in bankruptcy, the rules are there, surely we have more than a ruleset in our house, we have the codexs, we have everything to play the edition we want to play, and also we have internet where we can find old rules and see how it was the game at that time. Also we can use the money we were spending on updating the armys in other games.

Interesting to point out is the
OldHammer,s moves...

As allways, the most important is not the company that produces the game, but the players, what really matters is the people who gathers to spend a good time with other people with painted miniatures or not, with painted scenery or not, with rules, dices, and the wants of having a nice time...

I bet this is for good, the game is very worn and many of the old players are yet very tired of all the handling. Time to change, time to stop being tied to a brand and their ideas of how the game should be. Time to create rulesets, to test other things, to try other sculptors, to free ourselves from the idea of A GAME= MINIATURES + RULESET all in the same package, yes this is for good. I think if it's the same with magic, all will continue to play with the cards you have if the company dies, we should assume the same in Warhammer.
But hey, many words for a brand in decline.
